The one matters to God.
Over and over again Jesus taught the value of one to God. He described God as the shepherd who leaves the ninety-nine sheep to find the one that is lost; the woman who searches for the one coin that is missing until she finds it; the father who waits for his wayward son to return home to him.
Steven Spielberg explores the theme of one in several of his films. From E.T. to A.I to Schindler's List to Saving Private Ryan, Speilberg seems almost consumed with the journey of the solitary individual. In Saving Private Ryan we find a true story of how a troop of men marched through a world war to find and secure the safe return of one soldier. The movie raises several important questions: What is the value of one human being? To what extreme should we go to save one person?
I used to think that I was desperately searching for God. I've changed my mind about that. Looking back, I realize that God was desperately searching for me. I used to wonder why my soul ached and God wouldn't do anything about it. Now I know that it was that very pain that drove me to God. Life without God is starvation of the soul. I thought for a while that God could meet my needs and stop my soul hunger. Now I know that isn't the case.
My soul doesn't hunger for something from God; my soul hungers God. And by the way so does yours.
That's why everything else will leave you unsatisfied in the end. But don't let this frustrate you; just let it fuel you. All the evidence you need to prove God is waiting within you to be discovered.
